has written two non-fiction books about his life as a physician.
My Own Country is about his experiences as an internal medicine physician in rural East Tennessee in the early 1980s when the HIV virus first appeared in the region.
The Tennis Partner is about his experiences as a teaching physician in Texas and his relationship with another physician which whom he played tennis.
Doctor Woman of the Cumberlands by May Cravath Wharton is an autobiography by a woman who practiced medicine beginning very early in the 20th century in very rural east Tennessee. She rode a mule into remote areas. Eventually she and two women assistants built community health care services cumulating in the construction thirty years later in 1950 with the building of a modern hospital in Crossville, Tennessee. The three women were honored as the three founders of the hospital. This book is available at the library.
